Westgate Bridge toll means wall to wall trucks

Greens MLC Colleen Hartland says any plans to toll the Westgate Bridge would lead to even more trucks in residential streets in Yarraville and Footscray and financial hardship in the newer suburbs.

"Toll the trucks that use the freeway? Premier, you're not helping," said Colleen Hartland.

"The reason trucks take the rat-run through Yarraville and Footscray is that that the direct road from the Port to the freeway is tolled. Another toll will will make residential streets even more attractive to trucks."

"If you want to make roads less congested, buy a freight train. Each train takes 110 trucks off the road."

"Give the new suburbs decent public transport and they'll gladly use it to avoid traffic jams."

"The whole idea of tolling old roads to build new ones is chaos instead of planning."
