Greg Barber MLC is hoping to raise a private member's bill in February to increase the penalty for causing hazard to a person by opening their car door. This is a common hazard for cyclists, often referred to as "dooring", which currently causes around 2 to 3 cyclists to be sent to hospital each week.
Colleen Hartland MLC is pushing for the Victorian Cycling Strategy to remain on the government's agenda.
Port Phillip Council - Greens Councillor John Middleton
Port Phillip Council is investing in bicycle infrastructure to make the area more bike-firendly. Key actions include:
- Major commuter routes constructed or upgraded along St Kilda Road, Cecil Street, Fitzroy Street, Beaconsfield Parade/Jacka Boulevard and the foreshore;
- New lanes on local routes, including a contra-flow bike lane (the first in Port Phillip) in a one-way section of Acland Street; and
- Extension of the Melbourne bike share scheme into Port Phillip.
The council has introduced a Bike Plan to support their commitment to making Port Phillip bike-friendly.
