East-West Road Tunnel

In recent weeks, Ted Baillieu has enthusiastically endorsed the East West Tunnel by asking for $30M worth of federal funding to finish the plans. The Greens do not support federal or state funds being invested in another toll road at the expense of public transport.

Adam Bandt says the Federal government should not be funding Baillieu's tunnel - "I will fight tooth and nail to stop one single dollar of Commonwealth money going towards a privatised road tunnel through the middle of Melbourne." See here for more details.

Colleen Hartland is leading the charge at State Government level, stating "We've been through this before; Westlink is a lemon." You can keep up with Colleen's ongoing campaign against the Westlink here.

Greens councillors at the City of Yarra stand united with the community, pushing for investment in a Doncaster rail link instead of the road tunnel. Mayor Alison Clarke says “This tunnel would exacerbate air pollution and congestion, and lock Melbourne further into car-dependency, right when oil demand has outstripped supply, and petrol prices can only go up.” See here for more details, including the Yarra City Council's submission to the State Government, calling for the rail link.

Speed limit reductions

In the Yarra Ranges council, Greens Councillor Samantha Dunn is pushing for 50km speed limits through local townships to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Similarly in Darebin, Greens Councillor Trent McCarthy has been advocating for 40km speed limits in local areas.

Care share schemes

Port Phillip Council, where Greens Councillor John Middleton represents local constituents, is supporting car-share schemes, including providing on-street parking spaces and requiring car-share in some new multi-unit developments.
