About

The Melbourne City Greens is the inner-city branch of the Australian Greens (Victoria), and covers the same area as Melbourne City Council. It takes in members from the city and the suburbs of Carlton, Docklands, East Melbourne, Kensington, North Melbourne, Parkville, Southbank and West Melbourne, as well as parts of Carlton North, Port Melbourne and South Yarra; an area home to about 75,000 people.

The Melbourne City Greens is the only branch in the Melbourne Region and the branch and region share the same boundaries, members and office-bearers. The current office bearers for the Melbourne City Greens and Melbourne Regional Council are:

Convenor: Alister Air

Secretary: Rohan Leppert

Treasurer: Alison Parkes

Regional Councils are responsible for local policy and have the responsibility for federal, state and local electoral matters (including candidate pre-selection and campaigns). As such, the Melbourne Regional Council is solely responsible for Green Melbourne City Council electoral matters, and is responsible for State seat of Melbourne electoral matters (with Yarra and Western Suburbs Regional Councils) and Federal seat of Melbourne electoral matters (with Yarra, Western Suburbs and Northwest Metropolitan Regional Councils).

On Melbourne City Council, we have one elected Green, Cr Cathy Oke, elected in 2008.

In 2010, Adam Bandt was elected to the Federal Seat of Melbourne and Dr Richard DiNatale was elected to the Senate.

At the State level in 2010, in the Seat of Melbourne the Greens achieved a Two Party Preferred vote with candidate Brian Walters SC of 43.83%to former Education Minister Bronwyn Pike's 56.17%.  Greg Barber MLC was re-elected to the Legislative Assembly region of Northern Metropolitan.
