ABOUT HELEN HARRIS

Helen Harris OAM is a professional historian, who has lived in Whitehorse for many years, and in Elgar Ward since 1993.  She has been involved in heritage issues for more than 30 years.

Locally, she is a member of the Box Hill Historical Society, the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies and the Elgar Contact Residents group.  Helen was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 1993 for services to community history.  Helen’s professional website is www.helendoxfordharris.com.au

In 2005 Helen was the first member of the Greens to be elected as a Councillor at Whitehorse, and in 2008/9 was the first Greens Mayor of the city.  She serves on a number of Council’s sub-committees, including heritage and visual arts, and is Council's representative on the MAV Arts & Culture Committee and Professional Development Reference Group.

Reflecting her interest in environmental matters, her home has solar hot water, solar panels, water tanks, compost bins and a veggie garden.

She is currently State and National secretary of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA).

POLICIES

As a believer in transparent government and ethical behaviour, Helen believes that all candidates standing for political office should declare their membership of a political party, whether an endorsed candidate or not.

Helen lives in the Ward she represents, and is thus familiar with the concerns and interests of fellow residents.  She has been available at all times to residents and has worked with them to try and ameliorate the worst effects of the rampant development that is taking place within the Ward.

In 2005 she raised the issue in Council of the effect of Peak Oil. Council now has in place a Policy to deal with this, as well as a Climate Change Adaptation Policy, and a number of other environmental and health policies.

Helen supports expenditure on both Box Hill Aqualink and the Box Hill Gardens, as the two facilities, both extremely popular and well used, are vital to the health and well-being of residents.
