We need a smart energy system to achieve rapid reductions in greenhouse emissions.
Using brown coal generators to power Melbourne 200 kms away is not a smart system – and it’s the source of around half of Victoria’s greenhouse emissions.
A smart grid would place energy generation and consumption side by side, with each house and business supplying power for each other.
I want strong government action to fix the market rules and directly invest in the necessary infrastructure changes.
Energy efficiency improvements also have a major role to play in a smart energy system so that we can protect people on low incomes who are already vulnerable to increases in their energy bills.
