ABOUT KATHLEEN MALTZAHN

At 22 I went to live in the Philippines, working against the sexual exploitation of women. For years, I worked with women on the dirt-floored bars of Manila’s sex industry, learning about slavery up close. Then, back home, I uncovered sexual slavery in Melbourne. In the face of government denial and inaction, I worked for change. It wasn’t easy, but I knew it was right. And, in the end, we won. The law was changed, slave traders were jailed, and slavery victims got support. It was heady stuff.

That passion for making a difference is why I served on Yarra Council from 2004-2008. It’s why I headed up a women’s health service from 2007-2010. It’s certainly why I’m running for Richmond this election.

POLICIES

The state seat of Richmond covers a fabulous part of Melbourne. Abbotsford, Burnley, Clifton Hill, Collingwood, Cremorne, Fitzroy, North Fitzroy and Richmond are some of the most dynamic parts of Australia.

Talking to people, day in, day out, I'm hearing the same concerns, again and again - unreliable, crowded public transport badly run by private operators; precious water being wasted and taken for granted; underfunded schools; a government that doesn't listen; planning that ignores local residents and delivers bad outcomes; government complacency in the face of climate change.

In response to this, the Greens will work for:

  • Kinder for every three and four year old - fee-free and fully funded;
  • A train every ten minutes during the day and buses that meet every train;
  • An end to logging our native forests - the fastest and cheapest way to cut our greenhouse emissions and protect our water supply;
  • More money for public education - we are currently the lowest spending state in Australia;
  • A well understood plan for a sustainable city, with every citizen having their chance to influence it, via their local council having a seat at the table where the plan is written.
