At 22 I went to live in the Philippines, working against the sexual exploitation of women. For years, I worked with women on the dirt-floored bars of Manila’s sex industry, learning about slavery up close. Then, back home, I uncovered sexual slavery in Melbourne. In the face of government denial and inaction, I worked for change. It wasn’t easy, but I knew it was right. And, in the end, we won. The law was changed, slave traders were jailed, and slavery victims got support. It was heady stuff.
That passion for making a difference is why I served on Yarra Council from 2004-2008. It’s why I headed up a women’s health service from 2007-2010. It’s certainly why I’m running for Richmond this election.
